Topic: E36 M3 officially not really an M-car Posted: 30-December-2005 at 07:53 |
Karl-Heinz Kalbfell (MD of BMW Motorsport):
Why does the M3 look so little different to the standard car, unlike its predecessor?
We see the M3 as part of a line of sporting coupes like the 3.0 CSL and M635 CSi, not the road-racer that the M3 was.
Why did you call it the M3?
To be frank, if I'd had my way, it would not have been called the M3. I wanted to call it the 330 CSi but the parent company decided it should be called the M3 for marketing and racing reasons.
Does this mean that, despite withdrawing from the German touring car series, the M3 still has a works racing future?
We do and will continue to build cars for privateers but there is no works programme as such.
Will BMW enter a factory car in the next year against cars like the Honda NSX, Porsche 911 and Mazda RX-7?
The GT category is very interesting and we are looking closely at it. However, at the moment there is a problem with capacity. All our production is currently taken up building cars for customers.
(Autocar 9 December 1992)
Sorry for people like Pooky...
John

come on chaps we know where were not wanted....!! were being chucked out of the m-power forum. who will join me on my quest to start the 330 csi miami forum????? hold on mines an evo, so is it a 332 csi miami. hmmmmm..... sounds good dont it. sounds more like a night bus than a performance car. still if 321hp and 0-60 in 5.4 aint good enough, well take our non m cars and leave.... very quickly! ha ha
so if the e36 m3 was not an m3, does that mean that the m3 gt was the REAL m3 ???? m3 or not to be? that is the question.
oh no ive gone cross eyed.

No.....it is a 330 GTi
The E36 M3 had an M powered engine as standard Full Stop.
So for that, all E36 M3 owners are welcome to the M power forum!
The E28 M535i however, as fine a car as it was, wasn't powered by an M power engine, and should have been named the 535is
Uh-oo!

Yep makes perfect sense. He was talking about the 3.0 M3. Now the 3.2 evo on the other hand was every bit a real M3...

Kalbfell sounds like a purist to be honest. Something BMW should maybe of listened to. Whats the point in diluting the blood line of the M series if its not being raced. Having said that M5 was availiable before and I don't recall that being raced either.

Alfa's new boss, Karl-Heinz Kalbfell (ex-BMW) has rapidly adopted Italian style, turning up late to preside over the unveiling of the Brera and 159, and then talking in parables.
Hmmm, is this the very same man........ quote taken from 2005 Geneva motorshow.......................

If you thought he was being rude about the Euro spec M3 ,which at least had a decent M Power engine, then what do you think he would make of the US spec car!

I got an M3 Power for Christmas.. it was a Gillette razor and it included a Duracell M3 battery... it would seem BMW are not the only ones that use our famous moniker to increase desireability.

In all seriousness, I don't really get hung up on whether it is a 'real' M3 or not.

Yeah me too. Isn't much fun on track, overweight and heavy on consumables and has a tendency to understeer around my mouth when shaving...

smoke and mirrors on this one - can't tell who's being serious...
...but don't agree that the e36 engine was genuine m power - just a tweeked up standard engine if you ask me...
