Wheels with that offset would fit at the rear (I think), but may need spacers at the front (I think). However the tyre aspect rato would be too small and so would put the speedo out. Good for acceleration bad for top speed and fuel economy.

Hi, Sorry but back to the orignal post, I have a tyre/wheel question does anyone know if the following would fit on my M635 1987 -
ET24 16"x8" with 225/40 on the front and 245/45 on the rear would there be any clearance problems etc ?

Thanks awfully for all the info boys, everything you've said has now been confirmed! Steering Wheel wont fit, and nuts are too short.

A guy I work with used to be a tool maker for Bae, and has offered to make me the required nuts from scratch. Obviously I'm intrigued to find out what standard these might come out at, but I will be sure to let you know...

The steering wheel you want is the three spoke from
either the E12 M535i or the optional one for the E21
323i which I believe goes straight on - I guess Fritz
Bitz are about the best source.
Me? I like the old four spoke bus wheel!

The Sith Ifrican 745i had 16 inch rims, either 7 or 8
inches wide.

The part number for the correct wheelbolts is 36 132
908 065. If these are hard to get, try 36 139 055 942
which are the M535i bolts for the 7 inch wide
MOTORSPORT wheel (not Competition, sorry).

They are indeed from a Sith Ifrican 745i 24v. The
bolts you need are for the E12 M535i with the 14 x 7
'Competition' alloys as opposed to the stock 6.5 x 14.

Also, the M635CSi steering wheel won't fit.
Your '81 is an early E12 based car and the steering
column and steering lock arrangement is totally
different. The earlier steering lock engaged in a slot
in the column shaft, that later ones (from around late
1984) engages in teeth in the steering wheel hub.
It's worth remembering that virtually NOTHING from a
later Post May '82 car (with the long rear bumper that
goes all the way to the back arch) will fit your car.
Everything is different - the engine, gearbox,
suspension, brakes, bodyshell, electrics, trim......

The bits that swap over are: Bonnet, boot, front and
rear screens, tail lights...er....nosecone...and....er....

I've just peed on your chips.

           I have a confession to make, i know what they are because i have a set !, salted away in one of my sheds. I'm debating whether to fit them or the 16" BBS splits to my 745i (turbo), alas i need bolts as well.

Profit is more reasonable than justice.

Hiabboy- I am in awe (mixed with a certain amount of concern at how you might spend most of your spare time) over your wheel recognition skills. We're not worthy! etc etc...

p.s. rimstock will sell you unfeasibly long wheel bolts (together with some spacers that are not the right size (74mm male spigot), but can be turned down to fit if required.)

I expected Rot, bad fuel consumtion, big service bills, difficulty in getting parts, many many hours of cleaning... but "longer than standard bolts"!!! thats just taking the p***!

                  Those wheels were originally fitted on south african e23 745s (24valve) and are very rare.  Obviously being a BBS wheel they could have been bought aftermarket as well.. The tyre sizes as fitted are correct. Hopefully you got the bolts as well as i'm sure they are longer than standard.

Its true that I don't know what they were on originally, but they came from a guy breaking a knakered M635 (bought his steering wheel as well to replace my 'Bus' wheel).  Here is a picture to see if that sheds any light. Currently got two wearing 205/55 and two with 225/50.

I'm gussing they could be after market add ons, as they have BBS centres rather than BMW ones.

Should suit me fine though, since they are the same pattern as my current 14" wheels, and recently came off a 6 so should fit fine.

The e28 M5 had 16" rims as standard, and so they might be a set of these and they are quite rare. Also the E30 M3 had a 16" BBS rim available. As andyS has mentioned the M635 factory options was the Metric rim. Saying that i am sure at the time you could have specified an imperial rim. (Waiting to be corrected on this) as i was a little to young to be ordering brand new 635's.

I take it they were originally from an 8-series? If they were the original equipment on an M635 then they're TRX's (& hence 16.4").

rim finish is personal choice; polished looks nice, but is impossible to keep good in the winter when there  is salt on the roads unless you wash clean the wheels after every drive.

Just out of interest how far out were the E38 wheels??

I'll stick my question in here rather than starting a new thread, since its relevent.

My 635 is an 1981, and is therefore pre-TRX. It still has the original 14" BBS wheels with period rubber. I've just bought (ebay) a set of 16" BBS crossspokes from an M635, but they are rims only.

I'm going to go for 225/50 for the rubber, but what do you recon about the finish of the Rims? They are going to be referbished, but should I go for standard powdercoat or polished?.
