The rings you were given are just spacers that fit in behind the alloy. Different cars have different PCD's on the hub, PCD when talking about alloys refers to the size of the hole in the center of the alloy wheel, which fits over the hub which protrudes through the brake disk with the nut for the wheel bearing inside.  This makes sure the alloy wheel runs true. The reason manufacturers use spacers are so that the alloys can be sold to fit various cars.

Gents, I'm putting the new rims on tonight. I need a bit of guidance. With the wheels came some sort of silver rings, maybe sort of cone shaped. The wheel bloke said these "go on the back of the wheel" - can anyone elaborate a bit more?

And this is going to sound proper divvy, but the jacking points are those holes in my side skirts aren't they ???

Cheers.

It'd be rude not to "light up" the old ones before getting a new set

S'alright.

Once I've got the new wheels sorted I'm gonna trap u somewhere, coats the rears in cooking oil and burn them down to the canvas.

I didn't have much choice. My window was open. I was spitting out bits of Pirelli all the way home.
