Sorry to steal thread. What does syncing the throttles actually do, when is it necessary?
Cheers |

I bought a carbtune as well - highly recommended from me. Took all of 10 mins to sync the TBs. Mike - it makes sure the TBs are sucking in the same amount of air. Recommeded procedure after a valve clearence adjustment, and every now and then to keep things in tune. |

I presumes it's only available for four cylinder engines, what's available for six cylinder models....if anything? |

Does the kit come with all necessary adaptors to fit the ports on the throttle bodies ?

Well you get four tubes, but that doesn't limit it to 4-bangers. You only actually need one to do all of them, since you're taking a reading from all cylinders, calculating the average and adjusting so they are each at that average value. It just makes life a bit easier having the same number of tubes as cylinders. |

Throttle body synchronising is not just setting the vacuums up on each throttle. It involves setting up of the throttle plates so that they open at exactly the same time and continue to open the same amount up to wide open. This takes about 2 hours to do. Only after the throttle plates have been synchronised and valve clearances checked/corrected should you set the vacuums to be identical. It is unlikely that the throttle plates will be vastly out. Just to do it properly needs the plates to be set first. Ian

keep your hands off the plates if you are not absolutely sure what you are doing! Can't imagine lot's of them are out anyway. You will make quite a mess if you misalign them.

Agreed with UWEm3 I had a set of throttles from an M6 engine presented to me in a box that a guy had stripped for 'concours' cleaning , and when he assembled them the engine wouldn't run properly - it was cheaper for him to get a s/h set and clean them up than to try and get the originals set up - be warned! The only things that can sometimes wear are the small arms on the ends of the throttle spindles - I can't remember if they come as a spare part or not. If any other parts are damaged / loose then someone has been playing about before

Well I bought a Carbtune - impressive piece of equipment and easy to use. I followed the procedure posted by ian M635UK - i.e. turn each by-pass screw one complete turn out and then checked the readings. They certainly weren't all equal !! Played about with them until they were all equal and the engine was noticably smoother. Readings were about 16 on the carbtune which equates to about 215 millibar. How do these readings compare with your cars ? |

(standard 2,3) Mine all read 21.5 cmHg = 287 millibar, after adding up and dividing by 4. I have been informed that factory spec is 300 mBar +/- 5 mBar. (22 cmHg) for optimum results you should have your valve lash done before doing this though . Edited by 215DMX |
